30% growth for medical assistant careers

Medical assistants are a large subset of medical care workers supplying a broad range of aid in the workings of health related facilities. The field is estimated to grow to 700 thousand jobs or 31% growth rate by 2020, and offer nearly 700 thousand jobs. This wonderful development ensures wonderful job prospects for current and future MAs. That is why, an increasing number of people considering a career switch, want to become a medical assistant.

The assignments of an MA largely depend on the actual business and the location of work. Factors such as size of workforce, facility size and the type of specialty, all affect the nature of potential tasks a medical assistant may need to perform at work. Oftentimes, medical assistant may be involved with strictly administrative duties, such as assisting with medical billing, answering phones or ordering office supplies. At other times an MA will perform more clinical duties, such as taking patient history, assist with physical exam, handle specimens or perform uncomplicated lab testing.

For the most part there is no single degree that persons looking to become a medical assistant must take.  Consequently there is no uniform certificate issued to MAs nationwide. Many positions are filled up by individuals who have earned a high school diploma and no additional training. However, an expanding number of people appear to be taking advantage of 1 year classes offered by local community colleges. After one year of training, students get a certificate, that undoubtedly helps find a job, especially in situations where an individual has had no prior experience in the field. People who are currently in high school and would like to enter the field of medical assisting, should try to take biology, anatomy or medical terminology training, if available. Those who have already graduated, may consider attending a community college and taking the above courses to improve their chances of finding a suitable and rewarding employment.

Potential students who would like to advance their career and perform more advanced tasks, such as administering some injections or assisting with imaging studies (X-ray, etc), will need to get additional training that will provide them with a state-issued certificate to perform these tasks. Undoubtedly, this approach is always good, and will position the an individual ahead of the competition.

Increasingly more MAs are seen going back to school to receive additional training, particularly as CNAs or LPNs. These training paths, provide the candidates with several career options allowing them to combine their experience as a medical assistant with a more complex clinical job. These options allow the candidates to secure a far better, more rewarding profession in a range of environments, varying from small private clinics to big health centers.
